what is it ? manual for the new avant garde, october 1971 / qué es ? manuel para la nueva vanguardia, octubre 1971

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Centro de Arte y Comunicación (C.A.Y.C.), 1971. Edition of 1,500. Small softcover 8vo in printed wrappers. Insides pages printed on rectos only. Unpaginated. Text in Spanish and English.

A ‘manual for the new avant garde’ with a repeating sentence structure on each page that’s also translated into English. Through repetition and the changing of just a single word, Salcedo finds a way to question the very concept of avant garde. A beautifully typeset book that's brilliant and mind numbing at the same time.

Very reminiscent of Robert Barry’s ‘It is … it isn’t …’ published a year later in 1972.

Wraps toned and slightly brittle with some cracking along spine, yet binding remains intact, a few faint stains and tidemarks, and age toning throughout. Else very good. Item #108
