a (edition a) no. 4: anti gravi graphitron

Zagreb: Vlastita Naklada, 1964. First edition. 16 x 16 cm (6.3 x 6.3") softcover 22-panel leporello bound in thin card stock covers silkscreened in black, with one additional page letterpressed in black affixed at inside cover. Text in Serbo-Croatian and Italian. Unpaginated [24 pp.]. Inscribed and signed in black ink by the artist at inside left cover.

Issue no. 4 of the artists’ publication ‘edition a,’ edited and designed by Ivan Picelj, a founding member of the New Tendencies movement, which emerged in the early 1960s in Zagreb. This issue featuring a leporello artists’ book by Picelj extending in width to 170 cm (66"). Each panel with a unique abstract geometric kinetic composition confined within a circle. The first page includes a concrete poem by Italian artist and concrete poet Carlo Belloli, dedicated to Picelj, highlighting the allure of the kinetic expressions. An impressive artists’ book, notable for its leporello format, kinetic content, and sheer physical width when unfolded. Seven issues of ‘edition a’ were published between 1962 and 1964, all in the same size, with the same lowercase “a” on the cover, but in varying colors. Constraint is a magical construct.

Artifact Vibration Standard Score: 8.5.

Scuffing and bumps to covers, including small fold lines along left edge of first panel, offset rubbing at inside rear cover on account of the thick ink, and trace amounts of age toning throughout. Very good.
