The first issue of the experimental journal ‘SIGNAL: International Review for Signalist Research,’ edited by Miroljub Todorovic, reflecting the movement he founded in the late 1950s with the intention of revolutionizing language and poetry through new expressions and mediums, including the use of science and advanced technologies. Per Todorovic’s description of Signalism in the first chapter: “Any struggle against science is doomed in advance, for it is struggle against man himself.” He goes on to state: “Methods and classification of Signalist poetry include Signalism in the narrow sense, computer poetry, aleatoric (or stochastic) poetry, statistical poetry, permutational, combinative and variative poetry, scientific poetry, technological poetry, Signalist kinetic and phonetic poetry, and Signalist manifestations.” ‘SIGNAL’ connected Todorovic with like-minded figures across the world from his outpost in Belgrade, in the former Yugoslavia.

Illustrated throughout with experimental, visual, and concrete poetry by Marina Abramovic, Julien Blaine, Jean-François Bory, Augusto de Campos, Ugo Carrega, Hans Clavin, Paul De Vree, Jochen Gerz, Bohumila Grögerová and Josef Hirsal, Raoul Hausmann, Arrigo Lora Totino, Eugenio Miccini, Jean-Claude Moineau, bpNichol, Giulia Nicolai, Clemente Padín, Michele Perfetti, Jirí Valoch, and Edgardo Antonio Vigo, among several others. Abramovic served on the editorial board of the first issue of ‘SIGNAL.’ Here, the artist also contributes visual poems, an expression not often seen in her oeuvre. Includes a chapter on related avant-garde movements and publications issued around the same time, including books, magazines, posters, and exhibition catalogs, forming an indispensable bibliography and reference point.

Issues 1–9 were published between 1970 and 1973, followed by twelve more in the 1990s.
