BIKINI GIRL NO. 8 [with editor’s business card]

New York: Lisa Baumgardner, 1981. First edition. Side-stapled 8vo in self-wrappers printed in black on thick pink paper. Pages printed in black. Unpaginated [32 pp. including covers]. Includes a small die-cut business card in the form of a painter’s palette printed in black on blush card stock.

Issue no. 8 of the independently published art and literary magazine ‘Bikini Girl,’ edited by Lisa Baumgardner. Emerging from New York’s downtown art scene in the late 1970s, the publication explores experimental writing, photography, popular culture, music, and commentary on gender and sexuality, documenting the people and attitudes surrounding the city’s underground creative community. Includes an extended conversation between Baumgardner, poet and photographer Gerard Malanga, and writer Lynne Tillman, alongside contributions by other artists and writers, and a centerfold image of performance artist John Sex.

Accompanying this example is a laid-in die-cut business card for Lisa Baumgardner, identifying her as a ‘Creative Consultant.’ An unusual piece of ephemera directly associated with the magazine’s editor.
