Köln: Verlag Galerie Der Spiegel, 1972. Softcover 8vo in blue paper wrappers. Unpaginated (ca. 64 pp.) Text in German and English.
An artists’s book of typographically illustrated quotes surrounding the importance of the written word. The quotes are by literal and cultural luminaries such as Homer, Jonathan Wolfgang von Goethe, Francis Bacon, Lord Byron, William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and Alexander Pope, and each quote is brought to life with its own unique typographic approach including design, arrangement, and color. An inspiring and educational ode to the word as it relates to language and its place in culture.
Spencer served as the editor of the magazine ‘Typographica New Series’ in the 1960’s and this influence is clearly evident on these pages.
Trace amounts of darkening to spine including a crease, and a small diagonal fold line to bottom right tip of front cover. Else fine. Item #136
