L’Angerie. Visuële Poëzie. with announcement poster for a 1973 reading

Amsterdam: De Bezige Bij, 1973. 8vo softcover in printed green wraps with glassine endpapers. Inside pages offset printed in red, brown, green, and yellow with tipped in strings of yarn on one page, and a double-edged razor blade sealed in wax paper on another. Unpaginated. To which is added a 28 x 56 cm offset printed poster in brown and green on recto only featuring a page from the book with tipped in strings of yarn alongside the date and place of a reading. Text in Dutch.

A profusely illustrated artists’ book by Clavin in which he playfully alters between collage, typography, illustration, and photography to create some of the most remarkable concrete poetry of its time. The added variation in the use of color makes each spread feel unique, yet it all holds together as a singular story. It’s clear that this book is as much about the connection between art, typography, and design, as it is about a man, woman, and relationships.

The announcement poster features one of the more powerful images replicated from the book featuring the top half of a woman’s torso printed in brown and green ink looking up toward four silhouettes of hands holding sharp-edged pinwheels. Between these four silhouettes are tipped in strings of yarn in sixteen different colors. The bottom of the poster features a1973 date and place of the reading.

Light surface wear to covers and some darkening to the text block, else fine. Very good poster with age toning along fold lines and a small closed vertical tear in the middle from being folded and unfolded. Item #20
