His Work, Quest and Philosphy

Basel, Boston, Berlin: Birkhäuser Verlag, 1989. Hardbound 4to in blind debossed white linen boards with a white label affixed to spine, laid inside a black and white dust jacket printed on glossy paper. 224 pp. Parallel text in English and German.

A handsome and generous survey of the Swiss graphic designer, typographer, teacher, and artist’s featuring some of the most iconic posters, identities, typographic sculptures, art, and advertisements created 1948 – 1988. Divided up into nine chapters which focus on his posters, integration of the arts, murals, minor graphic arts, notes on the language of signs and symbols, and education. Impeccably designed and complete with a laudatio by Paul Rand, a preface by Hans Wichman, a personal tribute by Ken Hiebert, and an essay from Hofmann himself regarding his posters.

Dust jacket very good with trace amounts of rubbing, including two small nicks to crown and heel of spine, and a 0.5" (1.25 cm) stain at top real panel of dust jacket, which has bled onto the top back cover. Book, else near fine. Item #216
