Internationale Manuskript Ausstellung Konkrete Poesie

Wuppertal: Kalender Verlag, 1961. Black card stock folder 10,7 x 29,9 cm (4.2 x 11.77") in size silk screened in white ink, with a white strip of paper pasted down on front cover, and a 10,4 x 35 cm (4.1 x 13.77") folded poem pasted inside.

A promotional folder from one of the earliest concrete poetry exhibitions in 1961 featuring Williams’ cascading ‘abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz (alphabet piece)’ on the cover and a German translation of ‘An Opera’ inside printed in microscopic type. Both of these pieces were subsequently published in other Fluxus publications such as Fluxkit in 1963 and 1964. In addition to Williams, other contributors included Carlo Belloli, Claus Bremer, Carlfriedrich Claus, Eugen Gomringer, Raoul Hausmann, Franz Mon, Diter Rot (Diether Roth), Jürgen Morschel, André Thomkins, Gerhard Rühm, “Noigandres 4”, Augusto de Campos, Haroldo de Campos, Décio Pignatari, and Ronaldo Azeredo. A great example showcasing the historical intersection and overlap of DADA, Fluxus, and concrete poetry.

The exhibition was organized by Verlag Kalender, the publishing house of Bernd Ebeling and Hansjoachim Dietrich who published several important art and Fluxus books and documents in the 1960’s.

A variant example where the folded poem on the inside has been pasted in upside down – perhaps a deliberate Fluxus gesture.

Light handling marks and rubbing to covers, light age toning, and a 3,5 cm (1.38") diagonal fold line to poem at bottom left edge, else fine. Item #253
