The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects

New York: Random House, 1967. First edition. Large 4to in photographically illustrated boards. Dust jacket printed in black and silver. 160 pp.

A seminal book on media, culture, and technology in which McLuhan coins the phrase ‘global village’ and predicts the coming of the Internet. Here, McLuhan’s esoteric theories come to life through Fiore’s powerful layouts demonstrating the importance of design as it relates to the contents of a book. Fiore clearly delivers on the often misquoted title ‘The Medium is the Massage’ through the design of the book itself. This larger first edition is also a great example of how scale impacts the reading process in comparison to the smaller more common paperback edition. One of the most iconic books from the 1960’s that would not have gained its notoriety without Fiore’s design.

Price clipped dust jacket with signs of wear including rubbing, small closed tears and chipping along spine and top and bottom edges, and a 5" closed tear to the back, else very good. Book very good with light rubbing to extremities and small red ink smudge on one of the pages. Item #3
