Openingnisolc No. 8

Woodchester Gloucestershire, England: Openings Press, Rooksmoor House, Nd. Edition of 600 hand-numbered examples in ink, this being no. 457. 48 x 48 cm broadside folded down to 12 x 12 cm, letter pressed in black on recto and verso.

An intricate work of concrete poetry in the form of a folded broadside which on the recto explores the relationship between the words ‘opening’ and ‘closing’ and their backward spellings ‘gninepo’ and ‘gnisolc’. The verso features the same words overprinted numerous times on top of each other. A conceptual piece from Mayer himself, typeset in all lowercase Futura reminiscent of his Futura series. Printed at John Furnival’s Openings Press which also published the Plakat broadside series among many other things.

Very good with age toning and wear along folded edges, rubbing and faint spotting to front and rear panels, including a small 0.5" (2.5 cm) paper abrasion along lower left margin of front panel. Item #502
