frankfurt am main: typos verlag, 1962. First edition of 200, of which this is no. 110. Softcover square 4to in gray dust jacket with majority of pages printed in color on rectos, interspersed with four sheets printed in black on transparent vellum. Unpaginated (34 pp.) Text in German. Signed and numbered by the artist.

Artists’ book by Wolfgang Schmidt exploring the format of the square through gradients of color that connect from one spread to the next. Color gradients interspersed with four transparent vellum sheets, each featuring a concrete poem typeset in Futura, some of which are printed on both sides. This example signed and numbered in pencil by the artist on title page.

One in a series of square artists’ books by the German artist, graphic designer, and typographer, all of which were printed in limited editions. Reminiscent of other artists’ books from the 1960s by Schmidt’s contemporaries and colleagues, including Hansjörg Mayer, Franz Mon, Diter Rot, and Bruno Munari.

A very good and unusually bright example with a few small closed tears along spine and flap of dust jacket, a faint spot at middle of front cover, and trace amounts of age toning along text block extremities. Item #923

Price: $400.00
