Bristol: Bristol Arts Centre, 1967. First edition. Saddle-stapled softcover 8vo in yellow wrappers with mimeographed pages alternating in white, blue, and yellow, and one additional red rubber stamp at centerfold. Unpaginated (12 pp. including covers.)

Catalogue issued for Cavan McCarthy’s 1967 exhibition at the Bristol Arts Center organized by Ian Breakwell. Title page includes a short biography of the artists which outlines McCarthy’s current job at the time working as a librarian at the College of Technology & Design in Blackburn. The word ‘librarian’ is here underlined in ink with an additional exclamation point added at the margin. It is unclear to us if this sardonic gesture was done by the artist, or by the previous owner. Either way it feels akin to McCarthy’s disposition. Catalogue contents include several typescript poems and concrete poems by McCarthy, all of which are listed on the title page. Acknowledgments are made to the magazines Approches and LABRIS, and to BBC. Verso side of title page outlines works shown at the exhibition, and promotions for Location Press, TLALOC, and Directory or Little Magazines edited by L. V. Fulton. Centerfold includes a fictional typescript telegram from the U.S. Army for use when a soldier is killed in action with the word ‘VIETNAM’ rubberstamped in red. Back cover is supposed to feature a rubber stamp poem made only with vowels, but is not present on this example.

A very good example previously folded for mailing, but stored flat. With age toning, one faint stain at lower-left front cover also visible on first page, rust to staples, one word underlined in ink and an added exclamation mark on title page, and faint staple indents to last six pages. Item #936
