l’histoire de l’histoire

Amsterdam: C. J. Aarts, 1973. Fourth edition of 125, of which this is no. 709. Saddle-stapled 8vo in blue gray wrappers printed in black, with pages printed in black. Unpaginated [24 pp.] Text in French and Dutch.

Artists’ book by the Dutch visual and concrete poet Hans Clavin on the repeating nature of history featuring the same typescript concrete poem printed throughout. This example from the fourth larger-sized edition of this title by Hans Clavin published in 125 examples by C. J. Aarts in Amsterdam in 1973. The first edition was published by Subvers-Press in IJmuiden in 1968 and consisted of 25 examples. Second and third edition also published by Subvers-Press in 1970 and 1971 respectively, but in Amsterdam, and consisted of 300 examples in each edition. The fourth edition was published in a larger format in 125 examples by C. J. Aarts in Amsterdam in 1973 and numbered 626–750.

Toning and partial sunning to covers on account of the inferior paper quality, including faint tidemarks and a small spot at upper front cover, and a diagonal fold line and handling crease to back cover. Text block with a faint diagonal fold line along right margin which has affected all the pages, and additional toning to last page. Very good overall. Item #956
