Basel: Gewebermuseum, 1960. 8vo in printed softcover wraps printed in black and white. 106 pp. Text in German.

A profusely illustrated exhibition catalog designed by Emil Ruder documenting the history and development of modern typography from 1890 to 1960. The historical context aside, this book gets top marks for the iconic cover set in upper- and lowercase Akzidenz Grotesk designed by Robert Büchler. The same design was also used as the exhibition poster. An impeccable example of Swiss typography and design from two of the earliest and most prolific pioneers.

With contributions by Stefan George, Bruce Rogers, Wassily Kandinsky, Tristan Tzara, Francis Picabia, Kurt Schwitters, F. T. Marinetti, Marcel Duchamp, Theo van Doesburg, Guillaume Apollinaire, Herbert Bayer, El Lissitzky, Piet Zwaart, Cassandre, Max Bill, Adrian Frutiger, Stanley Morison, Jan Tschichold, Herbert Read, Herb Lubalin, Bob Gill, Karl Gerstner among others, including a foreword by von Grüningen, and an introductory essay by Ruder.

Very good with light age toning throughout, bumps to corners, and trace amounts of rubbing to covers including a sticker ghost on back cover. Item #98
